Hanks. [1] Generally, they are used as a buffer system in cell culture media and help maintain the optimal physiological pH (about 7.0 to 7.4) for cell growth. Due to their not very reactive nature and their low concentration in solution, Hanks salts are mainly used in environments exposed to atmospheric conditions, as opposed to incubation of CO 2.
